The Best Way to Grow in the Spiritual Life: Let Yourself Be Loved

On the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Church invites us to contemplate one of the greatest mysteries of our faith: the infinite love that Christ has for each one of us.

The Best Way to Grow in the Spiritual Life

There is a simple yet profound secret to spiritual growth: allow yourself to be loved by God.

No human mind can fully grasp the depth of the love contained in the Sacred Heart of Jesus. His Heart is both human and divine, overflowing with a love that surpasses all understanding.

Saint Alphonsus Liguori once expressed this truth in a striking way. If all the love of every human being who has ever lived could be gathered into a single heart, and if the love of all the angels created by God were added to it, that immense love would not equal even a tiny fraction of the love that the Sacred Heart of Jesus has for each one of us.

Loved from All Eternity

Long before we were born, Christ already knew us and loved us.

From all eternity, He foresaw the moment of our creation, the day of our baptism, and every moment when His grace would touch our souls. Nothing in our lives is unknown to Him.

Even now, His Heart continues to beat with love for each of His children. He accompanies us through every struggle, every trial, and every sorrow.

Life’s difficulties can sometimes obscure the beautiful horizon of God’s love. Surrounded by problems, we may be tempted to doubt Him or question whether He truly cares for us. Yet His love remains eternal, infinite, and unchanging.

“It was because the LORD loved you…”

Deuteronomy 7:8

God desires our salvation and never ceases to love us.

A God Who Remains with Us

The love of Christ did not end with His earthly life.

The Son of God chose to become man, to live among us, to teach us, and to show us the path to Heaven. Yet when the time came to return to the Father, He did not leave us alone.

In an extraordinary act of love, He chose to remain with us in the Holy Eucharist.

Present in the Blessed Sacrament, He waits for us day and night. In every tabernacle and every consecrated Host exposed for adoration, Christ seems to say:

“I am here. Come to Me whenever you wish.”

He waits to listen to us, comfort us, strengthen us, and pour out His graces upon us. His desire is to fill our souls with every blessing.

“Come to Me”

In the Gospel for this feast, Jesus extends one of His most tender invitations:

“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Matthew 11:28

How relevant these words remain today.

So many people are weighed down by work, family concerns, anxiety about the future, wounds from the past, and struggles of conscience.

In the face of these burdens, Jesus does not first offer a method or a technique. Instead, He simply invites us to come to Him.

  • To draw near to His Heart.
  • To open our souls.
  • To entrust Him with our sorrows, our struggles, and our hopes.

It is there that He wishes to give us His grace, His peace, and the happiness that the world cannot provide.

Let Yourself Be Loved

Perhaps this is the greatest lesson of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

We often think that holiness consists primarily in accomplishing great works, making extraordinary sacrifices, or achieving remarkable spiritual feats.

Yet the Lord first asks something much simpler:

Let yourself be loved.

Open your heart so that He may truly enter it.

Allow Him to fill it with His tenderness, His mercy, His affection, and His love.

This trusting surrender is the foundation of authentic spiritual growth.

The Surest Path to Holiness

When we welcome Christ’s love, everything changes.

We begin to walk the surest path toward Heaven, toward true peace, and toward holiness itself.

“God is love, and whoever remains in love remains in God and God in him.”

1 John 4:16

Holiness does not begin with doing great things for God. It begins by allowing God to accomplish His great work within us.

On this feast of the Sacred Heart, let us respond generously to His invitation.

Let us approach Him with confidence.

Let us open our hearts to Him.

And above all, let us allow ourselves to be loved.
