5 Simple Steps to Grow Closer to God (Catholic Guide)

5 Simple Steps to Grow Closer to God (Catholic Guide)

Are you longing for a deeper intimacy with God? Do you want your spiritual life renewed, but feel unsure where to begin?

The good news is this: spiritual growth does not require complicated “spiritual gymnastics.” It often begins with simple steps, practised faithfully, day after day.

If you live these five steps consistently, you will notice something shift: more grace, more determination, and more confidence. And the final step will make the first four much easier.

Step 1: Begin Your Morning With a Short Prayer

If you want to grow closer to God, begin your day with Him.

Before your first cup of coffee. Before your phone. Before the noise of the day begins, lift your heart to heaven and offer a short prayer.

If you are not sure where to start, choose something simple, such as:

  • The Hail Mary
  • The Our Father
  • The Prayer to St. Michael

Keep it short. Keep it sincere.

If you are already doing well spiritually, this will strengthen your discipline. If you are struggling, even one prayer can be a real beginning. Use that small prayer to ask God for the grace to pray more. Small steps count, and they can take you far.

Step 2: Make Small Sacrifices Each Day

One of the most effective Catholic practices for spiritual renewal is the habit of small voluntary sacrifices.

Each day, choose one small comfort to give up, for love of God:

  • Skip dessert
  • Let someone go ahead of you
  • Hold back a complaint when the urge rises
  • Accept an inconvenience without making a point of it

The key is discretion. Do it quietly, without drawing attention to yourself. Offer it to God.

St. Thérèse of Lisieux is a beautiful example here. Her “little way” shows how small acts, offered with love, can lead to great holiness. Even tiny sacrifices unite us more closely to Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross. They strengthen the will and build virtue.

Step 3: Work on One Fault at a Time

Many people become discouraged because they try to change everything at once. Instead, choose one habitual fault to work on and focus your efforts there.

For example:

  • Impatience
  • Gossip
  • Harsh words
  • Careless use of your eyes
  • Spiritual laziness

Each morning, ask Our Lady for help to overcome that specific weakness. Then, each evening, examine your day. How many times did you fall? Five? Fifteen? Once? If it helps, write it down.

Stay with the same fault until you see real progress. Do not scatter your efforts. Think of your spiritual life as a castle with many towers. If you try to capture the whole castle at once, you will likely fail. But if you take one tower at a time, you will advance steadily.

As you make progress, move to the next fault. Over time, this practice can truly transform your life. And be sure to bring what you learn about yourself to confession.

Step 4: Go to Confession Regularly

Regular confession brings enormous blessings and helps keep the devil at a distance. If you want to renew your spiritual life, make confession a steady habit.

A good place to start is every two weeks. Once a week is even better.

If it has been a long time, you might feel nervous about returning. Remember: no sin is greater than God’s mercy. The priest is there not to condemn you, but to welcome you and lead you back to grace with compassion and understanding.

One important reminder: never receive Holy Communion if you are in a state of mortal sin. If you have committed a grave sin, do not wait for your next scheduled confession. Go as soon as reasonably possible.

Many people do not realize that confession is more than forgiveness. A good confession strengthens the soul and gives real help to resist sin. A single confession may not uproot a deeply rooted vice right away, but regular confession, with sincere resolutions, can overcome even long-standing habits over time.

The essential thing is this: do not give up.

Step 5: Devotion to Our Lady (The Key That Makes Everything Easier)

This final step is the most important, because it supports all the others.

Our Lord gave us His Mother to help us in all things. She is our great intercessor and protector. The surest way to grow closer to Jesus is through consecration to Him through the hands of His Blessed Mother, according to the method of St. Louis de Montfort.

If you have made this consecration in the past, consider renewing it. If you have never made it, now is an excellent time to begin.

The Heralds offer a free online course that guides you through the preparation, followed by an online consecration ceremony at the end.

Our Lady is close to you. She wants to help you belong entirely to her Son, Jesus Christ. Even your smallest prayers and your simplest efforts matter to her. She responds with an outpouring of grace to help you grow in faith, hope, and charity.
