Following Jesus: A Call to Conversion and Humility

Based on St Mark 2:13-17

In St Mark’s Gospel, we see Our Lord Jesus Christ walking beside the sea, surrounded by a large crowd eager to hear His Word. Among them, He calls Levi, son of Alpheus—later known as St Matthew—a tax collector and sinner considered a traitor by his own people. Despite this, Jesus chooses to sit and dine with Levi and many others like him, sinners and outcasts.

The Pharisees and scribes are scandalized by this, unable to understand why Jesus would associate with those they deem unworthy. Yet, Jesus shows us that His mission is to call those willing to convert, those humble enough to recognize their need for change and open to following Him.

Unlike the proud scribes who reject conversion, the tax collectors openly admit their need for grace. Jesus welcomes them because true faith begins with humility and the desire to transform.

Let us ask Our Lady to help us keep this lesson close to our hearts: never to presume we have all the truth, but to always seek Jesus with humility and a sincere will to convert. The truth, greater than any of us, is found in Our Lord Jesus Christ.
