Mission of Mercy in Haiti

The Heralds of the Gospel carried out ​​a new mission of mercy in Haiti during the month of Mary.

The mission began with the celebration of an early morning Mass at 6:00 a.m. in the parish of Divine Mercy located in Pétion-Ville, a town on the outskirts of Port -au- Prince.

As in 2010 after the devastating earthquake, the Mass was celebrated by Bishop Pierre Andre Dumas, Bishop of Anse- à-Veau and Miragoâne. The Mass was broadcast by Radio Soleil of the Archdiocese of Port-au-Prince.  Two persons were received as companions of the Heralds of the Gospel during the liturgy.

That same afternoon, the Heralds proceeded to the city of Port-au-Prince.

The mayor of the capital, Richard Joseph Pierre Duplan, crowned the statue in the presence of numerous municipal employees and joined them in reciting the rosary. In brief remarks, he stressed the importance of having faith in God in order fulfill the important task of service as employees of the municipality.

The first day of mission ended in the parish of St. Louis King of France, whose church was destroyed during the earthquake.

A numerous group of children from Sacred Heart Parish making their First Holy Communion participated in the morning celebration of Mass the next day, because their parish church had also sustained severe damage from the earthquake.

Father Joseph Simoly presided over the celebration.

Another celebration of the Eucharist was held in the evening at the Church of Our Lady of Altagrâce in the municipality of Delmas.

Together with His Excellency Alphonse Quesnel, the Auxiliary Bishop of Port-Au-Prince and Monsignor Giuseppe Trentadue, secretary of the Apostolic Nunciature in Haiti, the Heralds also visited the prison in Croix-des-Bouquets.  In addition to venerating the Blessed Virgin Mary and to reciting the Rosary, supplies of the basic necessities were distributed to inmates.

The mission ended with a visit to two primary schools, “Les joyeux lutins,” and the bilingual school Recreatech.  Afterwards a residence for the elderly, the place to enjoy one’s twilight years, as well as, families and other groups carrying out the Apostolate of the Shrine were visited.
